Valerie Solanas was a militant feminist during the 1960s. In 1967 she had written a play entitled The Scum Manifesto, which rounded on men and expressed her opinion of their desire for power and money. She had asked the Pop artist Andy Warhol to produce her play in 1967, but he had never responded to this request. She demanded the script’s return from him; Warhol told her he had lost it and she began demanding money instead. On 3 June 1968 she entered his studio in New York and shot him three times, for which she received three years for attempted murder. Solanas became a drug addict and a prostitute after serving her prison sentence and died at the age of 52 in San Francisco.
